Letrozole is primarily used to treat breast cancer in postmenopausal women. It is particularly beneficial for hormone receptor-positive tumors, which develop in response to estrogen. Letrozole is commonly administered to women who have had surgery and radiation for early-stage breast cancer. It reduces the chance of cancer recurrence by reducing estrogen levels in the body. Letrozole uses as an extra treatment to lower the odds of cancer recurrence in women who have already been taking tamoxifen for five years. Letrozole is also used as a first-line therapy for advanced breast cancer that has progressed to lymph nodes or beyond the breast. It may be useful even if the cancer has progressed while receiving additional treatments. Letrozole acts by inhibiting an enzyme called aromatase, which converts androgens into estrogen. By lowering estrogen levels, it slows or stops the development of hormone-sensitive cancers.
