In Spain, there are 22 mayors who have been in office for at least the last 40 years and who are running for re-election in the municipal elections this Sunday. Castilla y León is the community with the most mayors with at least 4 decades in office who will seek a new mandate at the polls, with 8 of the 22, half of them in the province of Valladolid. The majority of these long-term mayors run for the ranks of the PP, although almost all have previously gone by other acronyms. While in the large capitals the municipal elections are lived with expectation due to the possible political changes that their results may show, in many inland municipalities , especially in what is currently called emptied Spain , there is no uncertainty given that the same person has been there for decades winning one call after another.

And the fact is that, in Spain, there are some cases of mayors whose mandates began under Franco or in the first democratic elections and have been perpetuated legislature by legislature thanks to the support of voters and a way of doing politics that is only seen in the smaller population centers. Almost all of them belong to municipalities with less than 1,000 inhabitants, with the exception of Villanueva del Partido (Madrid), Brión (A Coruña), Marinaleda (Seville) and the Cantabrian towns of Ribamontán al Mar and Meruelo.



In geographical distribution, Castilla y León is the community in which there are most mayors with at least 4 decades in office who will seek a new mandate at the polls this Sunday, with 8 of the 22, half of them in the province from Valladolid. By political affiliation, the PP is the majority with 14 candidates for re-election , although almost all of them have previously gone by other acronyms. If elected, some of these longest-serving mayors in Spain would reach more than 5 decades of mandate in 2023 , at the end of the legislature that begins after Sunday's elections.
